The ratio of palladium to gold — historically the more volatile of the platinum-group metal ratios. Palladium spent decades trading below gold before a parabolic 2017–2022 cycle pushed it well above platinum and briefly above gold itself. The ratio has since reverted as EV transition pressures have weakened palladium demand. The chart tells the story of a metal that is more industrially leveraged than gold and therefore more sensitive to the auto cycle.

Analyst's Note

Palladium’s relationship with gold differs from platinum’s: where platinum is a hybrid industrial-monetary metal, palladium is overwhelmingly industrial — primarily auto catalyst demand for gasoline engines. The 2017–2022 cycle was a supply-shock event driven by Russian export concentration and emissions-standard tightening, not a monetary debasement signal. The mean reversion since 2022 reflects substitution by platinum (cheaper at the margin) and the secular EV transition. For the analytical investor, palladium:gold is more accurately read as an indicator of auto cycle health and Russian supply risk than as a monetary signal. Pair trades on this ratio require strong industrial-cycle conviction, not just statistical extremity.
